Melasma is a skin condition in which brown or gray patches appear on the cheeks, nose, forehead, chin, and above the lip. Although it’s not dangerous, many people who have it want to remove it for aesthetic reasons.
Often called the “mask of pregnancy,” melasma typically appears during the months when a mother is pregnant. Although melasma occurs 90% of the time in women, some men experience it as well.
As mentioned above, pregnancy is a common cause of melasma, but it can also be caused by hormone replacement tablets, birth control pills, liver problems, some medications, some waxing products, and certain products that use fragrances. Exposure to sunlight often triggers melasma.
Individuals who have darker skin tones (Latin, Middle Eastern, North African, Mediterranean, Asian, and Indian descent) typically experience melasma more often than those with lighter skin tones.

Laser treatments can often be an effective way to treat patients with melasma which has not responded well to other forms of treatment. Laser treatment of melasma uses lasers designed to specifically target and break apart deeper pigment within the layers of the skin, leaving the surrounding normal areas of the skin minimally affected. Following the laser treatment, the pigment which was reduced to smaller particles is naturally absorbed by the body’s lymphatic system. With most patients, multiple treatments are necessary when treating stubborn melasma.
Chemical peels have been proven to be an effective treatment for melasma, especially when patients are mindful to use a high quality sunscreen in conjunction with the treatment. The mild acid in a chemical peel removes damaged skin, which leaves behind a new layer of fresh, glowing skin.
