How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling uses superfine microneedles create micro-injuries to the skin in order to stimulate the body’s wound healing process. By creating these tiny punctures in the damaged skin, collagen and elastin production is triggered, which is the key to new, youthfully radiant skin.

One of the biggest benefits to microneedling is its ability to work as an anti-aging treatment. Because it can create new skin cells, it’s not only reversing the signs of aging, but also preventing them.

Even if your issues are not age-related, microneedling in McKinney, TX is very effective for other problems, such as large pores and acne scars. While microneedling is typically done on the face, it can be done anywhere, and gets excellent results.

What are Microneedling Treatments Like?

Before your microneedling treatment in McKinney TX, numbing cream will be applied to your skin to help keep any discomfort minimal. Dr. Barstad will then use a handheld instrument with the tiny needles on the damaged area. This instrument will pass over the skin, triggering the body’s natural healing process to create new, healthier skin.

What to Expect

Skin will be quite red for the next day or two following your microneedling treatment, and the sensation may feel similar to having a sunburn.

Some patients also experience peeling 3-5 days after their treatment, which is a normal side effect that is caused by the increased cell turnover. Remember: during the peeling process, do not pick or scratch at your skin. Apply moisturizer to keep itching at bay.

Once the redness and peeling decreases, patients will see their new skin that is plumper, fresher, and glowing.

Topical skin care products will also work more effectively, as they will be able to penetrate the skin more deeply.

Microneedling Aftercare

Skin must be kept hydrated after your microneedling treatment in McKinney, preferably with hyaluronic acid or a moisturizer with ceramide. Apply these products whenever your skin feels dry in order to soothe the skin and calm redness.

It’s best to avoid exfoliators and alcohol-based toners until the skin has healed, and patients should also stay away from the gym, sauna, and/or hot tubs for at least 24 hours after treatment to prevent sweat so that the skin heals properly. Direct sunlight should also be avoided, as heat and UV exposure can aggravate the skin.

Microneedling FAQs:

What conditions can microneedling treat?

Microneedling is commonly used to address various skin concerns, including acne scars, surgical scars, stretch marks, uneven skin texture, fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. It can also help improve overall skin tone and texture by stimulating collagen and elastin production.

Is microneedling painful?

Microneedling is generally well-tolerated, but the level of discomfort can vary depending on individual pain tolerance and the depth of the treatment. Topical numbing creams can be applied before the procedure to minimize any discomfort. During the procedure, some people may experience a mild prickling or scratching sensation. Afterward, the treated area may feel slightly sensitive or tender, similar to a mild sunburn, for a day or two.

Is there any downtime after microneedling?

The downtime after microneedling is relatively minimal. Immediately after the procedure, the treated skin may appear slightly red or flushed, similar to a mild sunburn. This redness typically subsides within a day or two. Some individuals may experience mild swelling or peeling, but it is generally mild and temporary. Your healthcare provider may recommend avoiding certain skincare products or activities for a few days to aid in the healing process.

Can I workout after my microneedling treatment?

It is generally recommended to avoid rigorous exercise or activities that may cause excessive sweating immediately after a microneedling treatment. It's important to allow your skin time to heal and recover. Typically, it is advised to avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, saunas, and swimming for at least 24 to 48 hours following a microneedling session.
