The average amount of time for each IPL photofacial treatment is about 15-30 minutes. Afterward, you may be given ice packs or a cream to help with any discomfort.
Each individual will have a different skin type and a different skin issue. The recovery period will depend on these factors, as well as how intense the treatment was.
Some patients will have temporary discoloration for about four days after their IPL photofacial treatment. This discoloration will flake off slowly. Others may experience splotchy or red skin, and some may see dark speckles on their skin during recovery. Patients may also feel like they have a sunburn, but any discomfort is very minimal.
The more damaged a person’s skin is, the more treatments they may need. The answer to how many sessions is needed depends on how large the area is that’s being treated, the intensity of the treatment, and the patient’s specific goals. Generally, a series of at least 4 treatments, scheduled every 4-6 weeks is recommended, followed by maintenance treatments.
The first beneficial effects of an IPL photofacial happen gradually, over about two weeks following treatment — and the final results can typically be seen about 3-5 months afterward.
